Maya Arulpragasam is a Tamalian of Sri Lankan descent. Best known by her stage name, M.I.A., her work in music often features a range of elements of genres. An accomplished visual artist by 2002, M.I.A. came to prominence in early 2004 through file sharing singles "Galang" and "Sunshowers" on the Internet. In 2005, her debut album, Arular, was nominated for the Mercury Prize. Her second album, Kala, was released in 2007.She recently announced her engagement to the son of Warner head honcho Edgar Bronfman. MIA plans to marry Bronfman’s son, rock guitarist, Benjamin Brewer as soon as possible. Sources say, M.I.A.’s work visa expires at the end of June which means she has to leave her NY apartment and exit the country, unless she’s marries an American by then. Y'all Caribbean people damn and well know what I am talking about. M.I.A. once said she wanted to marry Kanye West so she could qualify for a green card. The 27-year-old performed for 30 minutes at an MTV Movie Awards after-party and during her performance, she jumped on top of a photo booth and told the crowd she was making $100K for the gig. Who the hell cares?
