Adam Harris likes being chased by cops !! Olympic Glory

The Guyana Olympic Association put itself in a bit of a sticky situation. For the record, Adam Harris, (click here to see his my space page) an" United States competitor of Guyanese origin, was included on the team to replace previous wild card entrant Cleveland Forde, the local born and bred long-distance track and field specialist. Harris made the Guyana team with a ‘B’ qualifying standard, doing so by the narrowest of margins. In other words, his credentials suggest he will only be in Beijing to make numbers in one of the marquee athletics events. And he is not the first such competitor who has come in from overseas and used their connections to attend the world’s greatest sports event on Guyana’s behalf. In the 1996 and 2000, Atlanta and Sydney Games, a number of overseas competitors enjoyed the luxury Harris is about to enjoy and were never heard from again.

In Harris’ s case, he didn’t even have to show up. For starters, he has never set foot in Guyana and surely doesn’t know the difference between the National Park and the National Cricket Stadium. This is a grave injustice to local athletes who endure the tortures of staying in the sport, having little reward to expect while dealing with an odious national athletics governing body, enduring medieval type facilities and the dire economic hardships amateur sports competitors face in Guyana. This is not a campaign against athletes who live overseas and want to represent Guyana, rather it is an urging for better management of Guyana’s sport, in this case, the Olympic disciplines." This is a snippet of Adam's My Space page profile " What up i'm Adam Harris. I like to Breakdance, do Flips and i like to do a lot of illegal things that involve getting chased by the cops. I hang out with a bunch of street racers, dancers, and athletes. this is bout to be my 8th year of track and i'm a sophmore at the University of Michigan." May be this is why, the GOA decided to pick Adam , they realize he is use to running away from police, on a regular.

"Any athlete who wants to represent Guyana should be welcome, but their selection must be justified, instead of being farcical. f we are going to make up numbers at the Olympics track and field events we should so do with the locals – the ones like Rawle Greene and others who have competed tirelessly for many years despite unrelenting hostile circumstances. Green does not have the Olympics qualifying 200m `B’ standard which happens to be identical to Harris’ best time or the ‘A’ requirement. Neither do any of the active local competitors.

But they deserve some reward for their blood, sweat and tears.
Forde, a three-time Junior Carifta Games gold medalist, has not shown progress despite given exposure in the past, including specialized training in Kenya and at the Commonwealth Games and World Championships, and should not feel aggrieved at having his wild card entrĂ©e removed with Harris’ s selection.

But it should not have been caused by a foreigner without the necessary credentials, who has never raced on the grass tracks at home or at smaller competitions like the CAC Games, Pan American Games or Commonwealth Games. Over the years, Guyana has been represented at major world competitions primarily by Aliann Pompey and Marian Burnett, both based overseas. But their selections have been justified. They represented Guyana from the bottom coming up and won medals at the Commonwealth and Pan American Games and had to attain `A’ standard qualifying times for the Athens and Beijing Games."

It is sad to hear the bashing of Adam. He talks all the time about how it is his dream to run for his roots, and how he is so proud to wear Guyana's flag and represent them. Adam has said time and time again that he wants to put Guyana on the map, because many people have absolutely no idea that it even exists. When asked who he would rather run for, USA or Guyana, he says Guyana hands down because he wants to make a name for the country. He is so young, he has so far to go and will only keep improving. It may seem like he is just taking the luxory and running with it, but I am sure the articles about him will change in the future when Guyana is put on the map. Look out for Adam Harris. He will be the next big thing for your country.

Learn about someone before you trash their name. Adam has worked as hard as anyone to get to the olympics, so please don't try and bring him down for trying to get there just like everyone else. I've known the kid for 10 years, and the closest thing to a crime he's committed would probably be tee-peeing a friends house on a friday night. He has no misdemeanors, and certainly no felonies. He comes from an upstanding family in the west suburbs of chicago and is as friendly of a person as I've ever met. If you have a problem with the rules regarding this form of olympic eligibility, it should have nothing to do with the character of the athletes involved anyway. While I'm sure there are those in Guyana that have worked tirelessly to make the team, there is also a kid like Adam who has worked tirelessly to help the country of Guyana to show well in Beijing this year.

alright man. this actually is adam harris. and i got a bunch of my friends sendin me this blog. first off, i havnt updated my myspace profile in 2 years. second, im not going to be like the other people that come from the states and drop guyana when im done. unlike them i take pride in my roots, and i will proudly represent guyana, however i will not able to do so until im done with college because it interferes with my scholarship. AND as for being chased by the cops, it does not happen "on the regular" as a matter of fact it hasnt happened for about 5 years since i was in highschool, and liked the thrill of the chase with my friends. that was back when we were kids and enjoyed sneaking out of the house and things that kids do for fun. plus I'm sorry for takin fordes spot, i didn't even know till i read it in the newspaper...i even talked to my mom about how bad i felt. and i feel that with his ticket being punched he should have still been able to come.

Adam, i am glad to see, you actually took time out, to state your position on this matter.
Now in all honesty, it is good to hear of young athletes making strides in college and professionally. I myself have had experience in this arena. As noted in the post, it was taken from a newspaper article written by Orin Davidson, a very esteemed and professional sports journalist- whom I had the pleasure of working with many times. Mr. Davidson simply stated his take on the matter and I simply voiced his opinions. As a blogger I am entitled to air my views and the views of others in our society, portraying them seriously or comically but still in keeping with the truth. Mr. Davidson simply was pointing out the pit falls of our Olympic Association and I don't think it was meant to personally target you or your character. You should have also noticed, I never commented on whether I was for or against the entire matter because I only heard one side of the story. Trust me, whether I am for or against an issue, I am never afraid to make it known.
I just want to say you should be proud of your accomplishments and don't be side tracked or discouraged by the few that would never get to meet your current stature.
Good luck with your future endeavors and with college life. Note to self, stay out of trouble I know college life can be tempting and distracting. Hope to see you medaling at the next Olympics.
Thanks for the contribution.

Thats it exactly. Rant and rave about the injust system that we have here in Guyana, but do not hinder the names of the athletes that are just trying to support us. Harris' times are extremely good, and I am excited for him to have this experience and run for us. For him to rather run for us then is homeland USA (he did qualify to run in the USA trials but chose not to) is an honor, and I think people should realize the integrety of this young man. He may not know everything about the country, but the flag on his chest at the Olympic games should be enough. I think he will make us very proud, and as someone said earlier, garunteed there will be a shift in opinion once this young man does something for us.

Good Luck Adam Harris. I think there are more people rooting for you then these blogs may say. We here in Guyana thank you for representing us.
